Emerging Leaders Modular Content

If you are new to leadership it can be very daunting. Even if you are considering taking on the challenge of leading a team sometime in the future, the very thought of being responsible for others can be a little overwhelming, especially if you are not sure where to start. This ‘Introduction to Leadership’ section will help put your mind at ease by giving you some insight into why leadership matters, what makes a good leader and what great leadership looks like.
Leadership is a learnable skill and by the end of the section your skill development will have begun with some theory under your belt and ideas about what sort of leader you may turn out to be, in your head. The world of leadership will start to seem less daunting and more rewarding.

We have all worked under, or known of, a range of different leaders and probably, as a result, heard a lot about different leadership styles. To understand these in a bit more detail this section has delved into some particularly well known styles that most of us can identify with.
But more than this, this section looks at the concept of Distributed Leadership. This model of leadership is known to be responsible for high performing teams and organisations and consequently is a model of leadership that is widely encouraged in education. How your personal style of leadership matches a Distributed Leadership model in an organisation is something that you will navigate in this section, gaining a deeper understanding of how you will become a leader that builds teams by empowering those within them.

The world of education is all about change. Whether this is the way we deliver a curriculum or the rotas that we have to adhere to to cover the various responsibilities within a school, as educators we are, or should be, accustomed to change. However, as a phenomenon, change is often not well received and the vast majority of us don’t like it.
In this section we will explore what change represents to people, what it is about change that makes us dislike it and some strategies that leaders can adopt to make change not only tolerable, but something that we learn to embrace as a positive necessity.

Leadership is a role that will absorb as much time as you have to throw at it, and more! But leaders also need to be human and this means downing tools and actively looking after your own mental wellbeing. Your leadership journey is just that, a journey, and in order to successfully travel along your chosen path you need time to think, strategise and construct your journey in a way that is personal to you.
This section will give you some tools to help you evaluate your own leadership persona, understand yourself in a professional capacity as well as a personal one. Knowing yourself, your limits, strengths and weaknesses is an important part of this section and it is designed to help you reflect on your practice as you grow into the leader you wish you had had to this point.

Why Schools are investing in Emerging Leaders

Great schools recognise the need to establish sound leadership principles throughout their organisations, regardless of specific titles and roles. However, the financial and human resource cost of providing this is high, and internal capacity for accomplishing this is limited. Additionally, current external provision is isolated and inaccessible to many.

At Ubuntu we believe in nurturing leadership development from the ground up, by making it affordable and easily accessible to schools seeking to distribute leadership more effectively, and people seeking to self-develop and grow their careers.
